Star Tours and Canon

For this installment in the series I’ve been doing on how different older Star Wars works have contributed to modern canon, I wanted to look at the Star Tours ride and its followup The Adventure Continues. It might not have as numerous bullet points as others but it has more significant ones than most.

  • Of course, the RX-Series pilot droid and R-3X himself made their debut as a part of the classic ride. The RX-series got a couple of appearances (also voiced by Paul Reubens) onscreen in Rebels. The R-3X of Galaxy’s Edge is canonically the same as the pilot of the original ride. He crashed on Batuu and will occasionally quote the ride in the cantina.
  • The StarSpeeder 3000 itself and the Star Tours agency have gotten a few references in various places. Multiple episodes of The Clone Wars feature a billboard advertising Star Tours in Aurebesh. The CG model for the ship can be seen in the background of The Force Awakens on Jakku, as well as during the Smuggler’s Run ride. The logo for the agency can be glimpsed in the Corellian spaceport in Solo.
  • The classic G2 repair droid, or goose droid, from the ride’s queue got a couple of mentions in canon before getting a new visual depiction in the Droid Repair Bay VRG2-9T, the specific droid that was in the queue, appeared in the short story High Noon on Jakku.
  • AC-38, the pilot left behind in The Adventure Continues, got a section including a picture in Droidography that talked about his role in Star Tours. It mentions that AC’s ship was hijacked by a rogue protocol droid just like in the ride, leading to the model to be replaced with the RX-series like R-3X in the original ride.
  • In the cantina at Galaxy’s Edge R-3X will occasionally mention Aly San San, the flight attendant from The Adventure Continues.
  • The Naboo boathouse from the Naboo ending to The Adventure Continues was used for one of the Forces of Destiny shorts. Additionally the Encyclopedia of Starfighters and Other Vehicles has a page on the D-11 speeders from that ending and the page includes a picture of the boathouse interior taken directly from the ride.
  • The space station Valor in The Clone Wars is identical to the space station in the opening of The Adventure Continues, which served as direct inspiration for it.

That’s all I know of, feel free to let me know if you think of any others.

I like Star Wars. And Marvel too, to a lesser degree.
