The House of Tagge

Cassio

General Tagge made his first appearance in A New Hope, portrayed by Don Henderson and primarily appearing in the board room scene. He’s the one arguing with Motti, concerned about the Death Star’s possible weakness. The credits erroneously identify him as “Commander Taggi,” and the novel released a year earlier made him the one choked out by Vader instead of Motti.

The twenty-fifth issue of the classic Marvel comics in 1979 was the first source to expand on the Tagges outside the context of the films. The story established the House of Tagge as the head of a powerful corporation loyal to the Empire and mentioned that there is an Imperial general in the family, obviously the character seen in A New Hope. It also introduced the first additional family member, the eldest brother known as Baron Tagge who heads the family company.

The thirty-first issue identified the Baron as Orman Tagge and included an appearance from General Ulric Tagge, intended to be the general from the film.  Also introduced in that issue was a third brother, the scientific Silas Tagge. Their youngest sibling Domina was mentioned several issues before she made her first appearance in issue thirty-five.

Years earlier, Orman had been blinded by Vader and he began using a lightsaber built by Silas, training to take his revenge one day. Silas and Orman attempted to use the Omega Frost superweapon against the rebels only for Luke to destroy it. The brothers survived but were kept in stasis by Vader, neutralizing his Tagge rivals by blackmailing the new head of the family, Ulric.

Vader manipulated Domina against the rebels and Luke by telling her Luke was responsible for the deaths of her brothers. Orman escaped his captivity only for Vader to manipulate Luke into killing him using illusions. This caused Domina to keep her vendetta against the rebels, coming into conflict with them again later during an incident involving the Crimson Forever disease.

Years later, the HoloNet News articles released online in advance of Attack of the Clones established the family’s homeworld of Tepasi and identified the head of the family in that era as Baroness Sanya Tagge. General Ulric in the comics had mistakenly been drawn with the likeness of Motti’s actor rather than Tagge’s, leading to him being retconned into his own distinct character. Geonosis & the Outer Rim Worlds identified the film General Tagge as Cassio and it was later revealed that he died on the Death Star.

When it came time to pick an antagonist for the 2015 run of the Darth Vader comic, the Story Group decided to spare Cassio from dying on the Death Star, because he stops appearing halfway through the movie. It was instead established that Tagge was sent to investigate Leia’s claims of a rebel base on Dantooine (his presence during that investigation is seen in a couple stories in From a Certain Point of View). Cassio remained alive as a rival of Vader’s in that comic until the Emperor allowed Vader to execute his rival at the end of the run, killing Cassio off once more.

The 2020 run of Doctor Aphra finally brought the full House of Tagge back into the spotlight. The first story arc introduced nephew Ronen Tagge, favored by his aunt Domina. Domina herself, now head of the corporation, then became a major force in the series in the second arc. The fifth issue also featured a glimpse of the other family members.

Tagge Dynasty

I don’t think the Tagge furthest left is intended to be someone we know already but after her from left to right seem to be Ulric, Cassio, a young Ronen and his parents, Domina, Silas, and Orman. Domina and Ronen are still an active part of the run and it’s entirely possible we will continue to learn more about the family over time. The Tagge dynasty has a long history in Star Wars and they don’t seem to be going anywhere any time soon.

I like Star Wars. And Marvel too, to a lesser degree.

  1. Nice to have you back on the blog! I’d no idea Ulric was intended to be Cassio – ignoring the visual differences, his interactions with Vader in the original comic struck me as two men who didn’t know each other previously. I know the quasi-canon FFG books name-dropped another Tagge, who I head-canon as the woman on the far left of the last picture, but I hope we get something more concrete about the extended family going forward.
