Star Wars: The Ultimate Cookbook Continuity Breakdown

A cookbook might seem like an odd topic to cover, but this is the third time I’ve done this for one co-written by Marc Sumerak. Each book follows the same concept of being written in-universe by Cookie Tuggs, the beloved chef from Maz’s Castle in The Force Awakens and Black Spire Outpost at Galaxy’s Edge. This book in particular surprised me because almost every recipe is some form of deep pull. The obscurity and variety of sources add to the feel of Cookie truly going on a taste around the galaxy, and I’m impressed Jenn Fujikawa was able to give life to things that were never created to live off the page.

Core Worlds

  • The first recipe in the book, the Chandrilan Cheese Board, has a few references to Chandrila’s appearance in the Aftermath trilogy like bulabirds and the planet’s role as the New Republic’s first capital. Tintolives were originally shown on Chandrila in New Jedi Order: Edge of Victory II.
  • The Syndicate Snack Mix is from the crime-ridden planet of Lanz Carpo, one of the settings in Greg Pak’s run on the Star Wars comic.
  • Aldera Meatpies were first mentioned in From a Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back. With Alderaan being gone, Cookie learned the recipe from a chef on Tepasi, the Tagge homeworld named in HoloNet News.
  • Duraslug Rolls are made with the Coruscant duracrete slugs that were created and designed for Attack of the Clones: The Visual Dictionary.
  • Hosnian Herbage uses greens cultivated from the hanging gardens before Hosnian Prime’s destruction, which were seen in Bloodline.
  • The Balo Mushrooms, the ixetal cilona chemical, and their role in the creation of death sticks all goes back to Attack of the Clones era material like The New Essential Guide to Alien Species.
  • Cookie got Corellia Chews in Diadem Square, which was the setting of one of the interludes in Aftermath: Life Debt.
  • Carbonite ‘N’ Cream Pie is from Empress Teta, where pastry chefs use carbonite to freeze desserts. The planet and its carbonite mining both come from the Tales of the Jedi comics.
  • The high-pressure, methane-based atmosphere of Skako made Cookie skip visiting the world and instead learn the Skako Cooler recipe in a cantina on Brentaal IV instead, a world first mentioned in Adventure Journal.
  • Spark Eternal Sipper is a drink from the University of Bar’leth, inspired by the rumors of an ancient artificial intelligence in a tomb beneath the school from Alyssa Wong’s current run on the Doctor Aphra comic.

The Colonies

  • Byblos Squares come from the planet first mentioned in Cracken’s Rebel Operatives, while Cookie’s mention of Maz hiding her loot there is a reference to it being one of Maz’s hiding spots in Smuggler’s Guide. Later in the section, Nantoon Treasure Cake also mentions how that planet was one of Maz’s twelve hiding spots from the same book.
  • Aromatic Loralora Wings are made with a bird native to the moon of Ketz, which comes from A Crash of Fate. Cookie mentions that he intended to buy one of the birds from Bina on Batuu until it was freed from its cage in a street scuffle, which was a moment depicted in the book.
  • For Roasted Arkanian Tenderloin, Cookie intended to eat an Arkanian polar drake, a rare creature mentioned in Scum and Villainy: Case Files on the Galaxy’s Most Notorious. Though the species is protected, he managed to find a tenderloin genetically engineered by the planet’s scientists, referencing the Arkanian obsession with genetics that was a plot point in the Knights of the Old Republic comic.
  • Hynestia Spheres are taken from the planet that was the primary setting of Lando’s Luck. The section references numerous aspects of the planet from the book, including the Frozen Kava cantina.
  • The Narquois Rolls draws from information about Narq introduced in Jason Fry’s Aliens of the Galaxy, including the planet’s forests and subjugation by the Neimoidians.
  • Avedot Cakes are inspired by the Moon of Avedot, first mentioned in the Galaxy’s Edge miniseries to set up its role in the Allegiance comic, which shows the old New Republic impound lot mentioned in the book.
  • Fondor Ice comes from the manufacturing planet first mentioned in Han Solo at Stars’ End and recently given prominence by numerous mentions in Andor.
  • Cookie learned the recipe for the Cantina Crush drink from Lorana in her cantina the Labyrinth on Kelada, which was mentioned in Adventure Journal before Cavan Scott depicted it in one of his Adventures comics.
  • The Giju Glug comes from the Herglic homeworld first mentioned in WEG’s Dark Force Rising Sourcebook, while the Herglic Alley hyperspace lane comes from Smuggler’s Guide.

Inner Rim

  • Stuffed Candlewick Flowers (seen in Leia, Princess of Alderaan) are hard to find now that Alderaan is gone but have been preserved thanks to the descendants of Alderaanian settlers on Birren, an idea introduced in Bloodline.
  • Champala Chips were devised after Champala’s seas degraded and fishing became more of a challenge, an idea based on a throwaway line from Mas Amedda in Catalyst.
  • Sakhet’s Special of Corellian buckwheat noodles with rancor sauce on Denon is taken directly from the pages of Heir to the Jedi, including the fact that the meal is actually a secret code for Sakhet’s spy ring.
  • Sand Mynock ‘N’ Cheese from Sergia with its sand mynock tails and hunda cheese is taken from the world and creatures seen in Greg Pak’s Star Wars run.
  • Melitto Sap Cakes are based on the bleeding rock found on Li-Toran, which comes from the FFG sourcebook Cyphers and Masks.
  • Bastatha Blend talks about the titular planet and its inhospitable heat forcing the locals to live underground, which is all from Bloodline. Riosa Punch and all of the information about Riosa being devastated by the Empire’s factories later in the section comes from the same book.
  • Bacta Slush is made on Thyferra using a strain of Vratixian barley, which is a crop important in Cavan Scott’s initial arc for the first run of The High Republic.
  • Prisht Parfait is made using prisht fruit on the horticultural world of Barlok, which is all taken straight from the Outbound Flight novel.
  • Kiffu Fruit Fizz is said to be similar to the fruit fizz found in cantinas across the galaxy, probably a reference to fruit fizz being a common drink in cantinas in the Galaxies MMORPG.

Expansion Region

  • Kand and Zand Rolls from Dorin are made using the planet’s kand fruit and zand nuts, both of which were mentioned in WotC’s Galactic Campaign Guide. Cookie met a Kel Dor who had an orchard outside Dor’shan, the planet’s capital also from Wizards of the Coast material.
  • Dhanduese Drums are a recipe from the avians of the third moon of Dhandu, a species and location from Pirate’s Price.
  • Roasted Acklay Claws has a mention of the lemnai that the acklays hunt on Vendaxa, a piece of lore from Attack of the Clones: The Visual Dictionary.
  • Kerkoidia Grains are made from the giant blue savannas of the planet, mentioned in WotC’s The Clone Wars Campaign Guide.
  • Cookie made the recipe for the Aquaris Broth to satisfy the Aquaris Freeholder pirates that captured him, a group from Archie Goodwin and Al Williamson’s old Star Wars newspaper comics. Further details about the planet like local gnooroops are from The Essential Guide to Planets and Moons.
  • Kullgroon Drops come from the frosty planet with its Wastelands and Imperial outpost seen in Lando – Double or Nothing.
  • The Rim’s Edge drink comes from the cantina of the same name in a former monastery on Freerock, known for its use by old Imperial and rebel pilots, which was a setting at the end of Victory’s Price.
  • Haneli Flower Tea and the drought that made it difficult to find both come from a mention in A Crash of Fate.

Mid Rim

  • Sarkhai Crisps are inspired by the woodland planet Sarkhai and its locals that paint their faces from the MMORPG The Old Republic as the homeworld and species for Jedi Consular companion Nadia Grell.
  • Lammas Tree Bites from Haruun Kal come from the Lammas Trees seen in Shatterpoint, while its bombardment by the Empire came up recently in From a Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back.
  • Boiled Hammerfish comes from the species of fish native to Glee Anselm that was mentioned in Light of the Jedi, while the old rivalry between the Nautolans and the Anselmi is from older Attack of the Clones era materials.
  • Hocekureem Filets are named for the Hocekureem Sea on Falleen and inspired by the shortage of fleek eels in it, both of which are from the Shadows of the Empire novel.
  • Simmered Golden Pheasant comes from a bird that can be seen around Naboo in Battlefront II.
  • Cookie’s classic Fruit Jelly from The Force Awakens: The Visual Dictionary has been enhanced with shi-shok from the Aftermath trilogy and brub berries from Life Day Treasury.
  • Rillrrnnn Spears comes from the plant of the same name used to garnish foods on Kashyyyk and first seen in A.C. Crispin’s Rebel Dawn.
  • Bright Jewel Rice mentions Ord Mantell’s capital of Worlport, first identified in New Jedi Order: Agents of Chaos I.
  • Lha-Mi Glacier Bars are made with ice from Kijimi’s Lha-Mi glacier named in The Rise of Skywalker: The Visual Dictionary. This reference goes even deeper because the glacier is named for the Dai Bendu monk Lha-Mi from the Dawn of the Jedi comic. Chronologically this one has interesting implications, because Cookie hasn’t heard about Kijimi’s destruction, which means either word spreads slow or he’s visited all of these planets in the six months between Galaxy’s Edge and The Rise of Skywalker.
  • Spiced Jybbuk Juice was inspired by Cookie’s visit to Etai and the native etaan crystals that can supposedly power lightsabers. This is a particularly obscure reference to FFG’s Endless Vigil guide. The section also reveals that the jybbuk-fruit mentioned in Aftermath apparently comes from Etai.
  • The fireflies and Kindala mentioned in the Aleen Firefly section come from the fourth season The Clone Wars episode “Mercy Mission,” about R2 and 3PO’s misadventures on Aleen.

Hutt Space

  • Ylesian White Worms from the thick mud on the planet that are considered a delicacy by the Hutts are from Crispin’s The Paradise Snare.
  • The Shag Pabol Pasta is named for the Shag Pabol hyperspace route that cuts through Hutt Space.
  • Purlah Soup from Nar Shaddaa was previously mentioned in Smuggler’s Guide. The section’s mention of Grakkus the Hutt’s arena references Jason Aaron’s Star Wars run while the mention of the ancient Feast of Prosperity is from the more recent The Old Republic: Onslaught update to the MMORPG.
  • Dandoran Salad is from the calm, green planet introduced in the Commander mobile game, and the section has an additional mention of the planet’s mynock grottos that were seen there.
  • Circumtore Hoops are a recipe that comes from the strange ring-shaped planet that served as a setting in The Mandalorian Armor. This section also has a mention of the Glavis Ringworld seen in the third season of The Mandalorian.
  • Though not made with actual silicon, Silicon Crescents come from the silicon-covered world of Ankhural where the silicon storms force locals to live in shielded cities. This was Namir’s homeworld and all seen in his flashbacks in Battlefront: Twilight Company.
  • Yocola Azalus, or “drink dangerous” in Huttese, comes from the H’unn Cabaret Pit on Nar Kaaga, which was a location visited in the Bounty Hunters comic. Nar Kaaga itself is originally from The Essential Atlas.

Outer Rim

  • Valon Clusters come from the forest planet Valo and Cookie thinks the recipe dates back to some fair held there centuries ago, which would have been the Republic Fair seen in The Rising Storm. Cookie also got this recipe from an “annoyin’ Lepi” who wouldn’t stop cracking jokes and bragging about being the galaxy’s greatest smuggler whenever he visited Maz’s castle. While Cookie has forgotten the Lepi’s name, it’s clearly Jaxxon from the classic Marvel run who’s had a resurgence in recent years thanks to Cavan Scott, the author that happens to be the person that created Valo.
  • Honey Hive Spears from Geonosis has a mention of how the Geonosians were sterilized by the Empire after their work on the Death Star was done, which was a plot point in Kieron Gillen’s Darth Vader run and the third season of Rebels.
  • Saleucami’s Greater Cake Tree Stacks are named after a type of tree seen in The Clone Wars that got its own name in The Visual Encyclopedia.
  • Cookie found the recipe for the Mustafar Hot Pot in a cantina on the planet called The Last Resort, which was visited by Quinlan and Ventress in Dark Disciple.
  • Dac City Stew is a Mon Cala recipe that Cookie got from his Quarren/Mon Calamari hybrid cook Jom Jarusch before the cook met a bad end, as seen in Cookie’s introductory short story “A Recipe for Death” from Tales from a Galaxy Far, Far Away: Aliens.
  • Cantonican Cactus Bites are made with a cactus that grows by Canto Bight, which was mentioned in the Canto Bight anthology.
  • Jogan Fruit Greens is a salad from Tangletown, an area called the “Food Basket of Lothal.” The name and slogan come from an old advertisement seen in Rebel Journal by Ezra Bridger.
  • Cassius Tea Cookies are based on a Mandalorian tea Pre Vizsla shared with Maul in The Clone Wars, and the section ends with an obligatory “this is the way.”
  • Thuris Caf comes from the Bovris Tapcafe on the planet Ifron, an obscure place briefly visited by Mara Jade in Mara Jade – By the Emperor’s Hand. The Online Companion for The Essential Atlas placed the planet in the Thuris sector from Galaxy Guide 9.
  • Seezelslak’s Specialty is made by Cookie’s buddy Seezelslak in his rundown saloon on Batuu which was the core location in the Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge VR game.

Wild Space and the Unknown Regions

  • The introduction to the section has a mention of Gormaanda, the cook from the forever iconic Holiday Special.
  • Hanava Pods on Indoumodo come from a tree first mentioned in Adventure Journal, but its connection to Indoumodo was established in Adventures in Wild Space: The Cold.
  • Sarjenn Prime Spindles come from the icy location mentioned in the Doctor Aphra audio drama, which also got a recipe in the last book. The mention of archaeologists searching a fortress there furthers the wink to Aphra.
  • Karabbac Skewers are made with meat from the karabbac on Kalee, first mentioned in Revenge of the Sith: The Visual Dictionary. Other mentioned Kaleesh beasts are the mumuu from the same source and the erkush first referenced in Crosscurrent.
  • Mulita Mash is made from greens imported from the planet that may or may not be Drengir from The High Republic, with Cookie mentioning how the Jedi defeated them a few centuries ago.
  • Cup of Gold is a recipe Cookie made with crops from the prospecting planet Demir, which was raided by Phasma in Age of Resistance.
  • Parnassos Swirl Cakes were inspired by the planet by the same name, and Cookie recaps how the planet used to be lush until a nuclear reactor failure by Con Star Mining turned it into a radioactive wasteland. The planet and all of that backstory comes from the Phasma novel, where it was the primary setting and Phasma’s homeworld.
  • Cookie got the recipe for the frozen Csaplar Shake from the chilly Chiss homeworld of Csilla, making him probably one of the few people from outside the Unknown Regions to visit it. The names of Csilla and Csaplar were established in an article from the Star Wars Gamer magazine, while the subterranean city was recently fleshed out more in the Thrawn Ascendancy books.
  • The final recipe in the book, Hyperspace Brew, is one that Cookie got on his way back to Batuu after his journey around the galaxy was over, when he stopped at a fueling station above Rakata Prime. Cookie was uninterested with the clerk’s stories about how the species from the planet below had invented hyperspace travel. Both the planet and the ancient race were central to Knights of the Old Republic.

I like Star Wars. And Marvel too, to a lesser degree.
